Neck Pain

Pain or stiffness in the neck, accompanied by debilitating headaches is a common condition experienced by around two out of three Australians at some point

Neck pain is a widespread issue in Australia and has a high recurrence rate. Most people with neck pain don’t experience a complete resolution of symptoms, with between 50% and 85% experiencing neck pain again between 1 and 5 years later.

In most cases, and in the absence of red flag conditions (which your physio can identify), it can be an effective alternative to surgery or long-term medication by using natural movement and hands-on techniques to restore function and treat pain.

At Bondi Platinum Physio, we work to identify and treat the underlying causes of your neck pain. We focus not only on relieving the pain in the short term but, importantly, to minimise the likelihood and severity of it recurring.

  • What you’re feeling

Neck pain can presents as stiffness, tightness or discomfort when moving your head, particularly when turning, looking up or looking down. It can be accompanied by headaches and tension through the shoulders or upper back. Symptoms can build throughout the day.

Over time, untreated neck pain can lead to reduced movement, increased sensitivity and a lower tolerance to load through the neck and surrounding areas.

  • What can cause it

There are multiple potential causes including poor posture, sustained positions, overuse and stress. Long periods of sitting, particularly with screen-based work, or limited movement throughout the day can all contribute. Rare non-physical factors can also cause neck pain, making an early professional assessment crucial to ruling out serious underlying conditions.

Our physios are trained to identify when neck pain is due to a more serious underlying injury or condition and will immediately let you know if that’s the case and what the next steps should be.

  • What you need to know

Neck pain and the associated headaches can be debilitating if left untreated and usually won’t go away without treatment.

Taking pain relief medication doesn’t solve the issue and can just mask the pain.

  • How we help you

Physiotherapy is an effective method to relieve neck pain which goes beyond masking pain with medication by empowering you to understand your body and manage symptoms independently.

Our physio will assess your movement, posture and lifestyle and create a personalized treatment plan for your neck pain which targets weak muscles, poor posture and movement patterns.
