Running Injuries
While running is one of the most accessible and rewarding forms of exercise, it also carries a spectrum of injury risk ranging from acute traumatic events to overload conditions which develop gradually.
There’s no doubt that running places significant load on the body and therefore carries a real risk of injury.
Importantly, there is rarely a single cause for running injuries - or a quick fix - which is why a thorough physiotherapy assessment is critical. An expert physio will not only assess the physical presentation, but also want to understand your training history, goals and lifestyle. This allows for a more precise and effective management plan.
Physiotherapy plays a key role not only in treating injuries, but also in preventing them. Whether you’re dealing with gnawing pain, preparing for an event like a marathon or City2Surf or simply wanting to run consistently without setbacks, a structured approach is essential.
Bondi Platinum Physio can guide your training volume, optimise your running mechanics and prescribe targeted strength work to build tissue resilience. Ultimately, our goal is to keep you running - stronger, more efficiently and with reduced risk of injury over the long term.

What you’re feeling
Running injuries can range from acute, traumatic events - such as ankle sprains or knee injuries - to more common gradual overload conditions that develop over time. These typically affect the lower limb, including the Achilles tendon, knee, hip, shin and foot, but runners can also experience lower back or even neck discomfort.
At Bondi Platinum Physio, we frequently see runners with conditions such as Achilles tendinopathy, patellofemoral pain, shin splints, stress fractures and soft tissue strains (calf, hamstring, quadriceps).

What can cause it
There’s rarely a single cause - or a quick fix - for running injuries. They are usually multifactorial. Training volume, recent changes in load, running technique, footwear, strength levels, previous injuries and even psychosocial stress all play a role.

What you need to know
A common question among runners is: how much pain is okay to run through? The reality is that not all pain is harmful. Low-level discomfort that settles quickly and doesn’t worsen during or after a run may be ok. However, pain that persists, escalates, or fails to improve over a few days suggests that tissue capacity is being exceeded.
